Der US-Softwareriese Microsoft bereitet einem Bericht zufolge die Präsentation der nächsten Windows-Version vor. Die Neuauflage des weit verbreiteten Betriebssystems solle am 30. September vorgestellt werden, berichtete die auf IT-Nachrichten spezialisierte Internetseite "The Verge" am Donnerstag unter Berufung auf Insider.
Das künftige Windows 9 firmiere vorerst unter dem Codenamen "Threshold" (Schwelle). Des bisher neueste Windows, die Version 8, war Ende Oktober 2012 veröffentlicht worden. Microsoft hatte damit versucht, sich auf die Nutzungsbedingungen bei Tabletcomputern und Smartphones einzustellen. Allerdings stieß das Betriebssystem auf wenig Begeisterung.
Bei klassischen PCs ist Windows immer noch weit verbreitet, doch bei Smartphones und Tablets sieht es ganz anders aus. Einer Schätzung der Marktforschungsfirma Strategy Analytics zufolge liegt der Marktanteil bei internetfähigen Handys unter drei Prozent. Rund 85 Prozent der in den vergangenen Monaten verkauften Smartphones laufen demnach mit dem Betriebssystem Android von Google. Rund zwölf Prozent sind iPhones von Apple mit dem Betriebssystem iOS.
Die geplante Präsentation Ende September richtet sich laut "The Verge" an Entwickler, die andere Software auf das neue Windows abstimmen müssen. Bei Windows 9 solle das klassische Startmenü zurückkehren, dass bei Windows 8 zum Leidwesen vieler Nutzer abgeschafft worden war. Microsoft wollte sich zu dem Bericht der Internetseite nicht äußern.
