Move over, Tesla…and make way for an electric BMW
Tesla Motors Inc. TSLA -6.38% is, so far, peerless. It succeeded in making an electric car that is very, very far from an ugly, slow, and boring golf cart — that’s what CEO Elon Musk initially set out to do as told to “60 Minutes” a while back.
But the latest offerings from Germany’s BMW AG XE:BMW +0.56% , however, have the potential to eat away at Tesla’s fan base, analysts at Barclays said in a note Tuesday. So much that they said success for Tesla’s so-called Gen III vehicles is not guaranteed in the medium term.
“Combined with plateauing of Model S demand in the U.S. and Norway, we see incremental risk to the demand outlook for Tesla,” the Barclays analysts said.
BMW is scheduled to unveil its plug-in hybrid i8 at an analyst event in Santa Monica, Calif., later this week.
“We think BMW have positioned themselves as technology leaders in this field potentially to out-rival Tesla,” the analysts said.
BMW has two electric offerings, the i3, a city car, and the i8, a sports car. The i3 is smaller and its range is lower than Tesla’s Model S, but it will appeal to the same type of driver as Teslas do, although maybe “a slightly less flashy one,” the analysts said.
Tesla’s target audience is likely sandwiched between the two i-brand models, they added.
BMW’s emphasis on sustainability throughout the process could set its cars apart as “greener” than Tesla’s, however.
Barclays rates Tesla stock underweight, with a price target of $220, and BMW’s stock as an overweight, with a price target of EUR116 ($161).
Shares of Tesla fell 3.8% on Tuesday. The stock has gained 250% in the past 12 months, however, and 17% in the last three months.
