In diesem Jahr sollen es 35 000 Stück werden, wie Firmengründer und Chef Elon Musk am Mittwoch in einem Brief an die Aktionäre ankündigte.
Nicht einmal Berichte über Brände bei dem rund 200 Stundenkilometer schnellen Auto hielten die Fans vom Kauf ab. Bei Unfällen in den USA hatten Metallgegenstände auf der Fahrbahn die im Boden verbauten Batterien beschädigt. Musk hatte unter Berufung auf Statistiken erklärt, das Model S sei sicherer als Autos mit Verbrennungsmotor.
Tesla hatte das sportliche Model S Mitte 2012 auf den Markt gebracht und im ersten Jahr 2650 Mal ausgeliefert. Für das vergangene Jahr hatte Musk ursprünglich 20 000 verkaufte Fahrzeuge angepeilt.
