After taking over the struggling textile maker in 1965, Warren Buffett transformed the company into a diversified conglomerate that had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 20% over the following six decades.

That rally would have turned $1,000 into $55 million. The same investment in the S 500, which had a CAGR of 10% over the same period, would be worth about $390,000.
