  • Medtronic offers investors exposure to best-in-class maker of medical devices.
  • The company has a long history of returning value to shareholders and is a dividend aristocrat.
  • The company can leverage its acquisition of Covidien to gain exposure to emerging markets.



  • Medtronic shows strong historical performance, and I believe the company is in a sweet spot going forward and will greatly benefit from the Covidien deal for a long time to come. With the deal completed, the company expects free cash flow to total $40 billion over the next 5 years, which is up from $29 billion in the previous 5 years. Free cash flow is the basis to a strong company, because it allows the company the flexibility to reinvest in itself, pay down debt and return value to shareholders, and Medtronic has a terrific history of doing all three.
