On the 30th anniversary of the 1987 Black Monday crash, the market started the day in the red but gradually rose during the session, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) and the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) posting tiny gains to record highs.

Interest-rate-sensitive utility stocks led the market today, with the Utilities Select SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLU) gaining 1%. Consumer stocks were a drag on the indexes, and the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLP) gave up 0.5%.
