Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) has been behind the curve in the self-driving-car race as compared to rival chipmaker NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA). But Chipzilla is pulling out all the stops to change the status quo by building an alliance of automakers and component suppliers.

So it doesn't come as a surprise that Intel's engineering alliance of BMW, Delphi Automotive, and Mobileye is now welcoming Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (NYSE: FCAU) in a bid to strengthen its technology development and share the high costs of developing autonomous cars.
