Munich, 04 February 2020

Telefónica Deutschland signs loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for Euro 450 million to finance 5G network rollout

- Funds to be used for mobile broadband expansion

- Maturity of the loan is eight years

- Telefónica Deutschland further improves financing profile

- Cooperation with EIB underlines sustainability strategy

Telefónica Deutschland has secured a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) amounting to EUR 450 million. The company will use the proceeds to finance the rollout of its 5G network and the further densification of its LTE network.

In December 2019, the Telefónica Deutschland announced the launch of a smart investment program to further improve network quality in order to accelerate its growth profile. To this end, Telefónica Deutschland will significantly increase its investments in the mobile network in 2020 and 2021 with a focus be on boosting rural coverage primarily with 4G and accelerating urban capacity primarily with 5G. The basis will be a smart investment profile that foresees the re-farming of spectrum and efficient use of technologies including the envisaged switch-off of our 3G network by the end of 2022.

The loan concluded via Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG has a term of eight years and further improves Telefónica Deutschland's financing structure.

Following the acquisition of E-Plus, the EIB financed the consolidation of Telefónica Deutschland's mobile network in 2016 with a loan linked to ambitious energy saving targets.

In the medium term, we expect our network investments to make an important contribution to improving our sustainability rating. Telefónica Deutschland already concluded a syndicated loan amounting to EUR 750 million in December 2019, with the interest margin linked to an external sustainability rating.
