On June 8, shares of California-based renewable natural gas (RNG) producer Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ: CLNE) surged by 31.52% in a single day. No fundamental changes led to the surge, but members of the 10 million-strong WallStreetBets trading community began to note the company as a new "meme stock."

Investors are arguably wondering if this will be a one-time pop or if there is momentum building for an even greater rally. Just what is so special about Clean Energy?
