Better Real Estate Stock: Realty Income vs. W.P. Carey

Thanks to Realty Income's (NYSE: O) purchase of VEREIT, I now own both this real estate investment trust (REIT) and its "rival" W.P. Carey (NYSE: WPC). I'm happy about that, but what if you only want one of the two? There are some key differences (and similarities) here that might make one a better option than the other. Here's what you should be thinking about to make the final call.

Realty Income is by far the largest net lease REIT you can buy. Its portfolio has more than 10,000 properties in it, and it has a market cap of roughly $37 billion. W.P. Carey has a market cap of about $15 billion and a portfolio of just 1,260 or so properties.
