Activision Blizzard Launches New Free-to-Play "Call of Duty"

Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI) will launch its long-rumored battle-royale game Call of Duty: Warzone with a surprise release on Tuesday. The latest entry in the popular first-person-shooter franchise will see up to 150 players competing to be the last player standing on a large map that shrinks over time and be available and free to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Call of Duty: Warzone's core gameplay hook is a variant of the battle-royale style made popular by games including Fortnite and Player Unknown's Battlegrounds. Activision Blizzard was initially caught off guard by the exploding popularity of high-quality free-to-play games, and while the overall battle-royale craze has settled down a bit, the company is testing out how successful the distribution model can be for its big properties.
