Northern Trust Corporation (NTRS.US) – FY2025 Annual Report

Northern Trust closed 2025 with net income of roughly $1.74 billion, down about 14% from the prior year, even as the underlying fee-generating businesses continued to expand. The apparent contraction masks an important detail: 2024 results were inflated by a large one-off gain, which makes the year-over-year comparison somewhat misleading. Total assets grew meaningfully to about $177 billion, driven largely by an influx of deposits.

The revenue and profitability picture appears more encouraging beneath the headline decline. Core trust, investment, and servicing fees climbed to roughly $5.0 billion, while net interest income rose again to $2.41 billion, continuing a multi-year upward trend. The primary distortion sits in "Other Operating Income," which spiked to over $1.1 billion in 2024 (reflecting a Visa share sale) before normalizing to around $208 million in 2025. Stripping out that item, the operating businesses seem to have grown steadily, with both the Asset Servicing and Wealth Management segments posting higher pretax income. Net margin slipped to 21.5% from 24.5%, but this too largely reflects the prior-year gain rather than operational deterioration.
