Financial analysis of Stellantis

Stellantis’s FY2025 results mark a striking break from the group’s recent history. After several years of solid profitability—net income averaged over €6.5 billion across the prior four years—the company recorded a net loss exceeding €22 billion, with revenue slipping only modestly to just over €153 billion. The overall trajectory suggests that a confluence of operational setbacks and significant non-cash charges overwhelmed what was previously a stable earnings profile.

The most visible distortion sits in the income statement. Gross margin flipped to a negative 1.4%, down from 13% a year earlier, implying that the cost of sales alone outstripped revenue. Selling, general and administrative expenses remained substantial, but it is the scale of restructuring expenses (over €900 million) and a €1.3 billion share of losses from equity-method investments that compounded the pressure. As a result, the operating margin collapsed to roughly -17% and net margin to around -14.5%. The deterioration appears to have been accelerated by large non-cash items—provisions of over €11 billion and “other non-cash adjustments” of nearly €11 billion feature prominently in the cash flow reconciliation—which could indicate substantial write-downs or forward-looking charges tied to the group’s strategic realignment.

The balance sheet reflects this shock. Equity contracted by about 34% year-on-year, falling to roughly €54 billion, while total assets remained broadly stable near €195 billion. Debt-to-equity consequently rose to 0.59 from 0.24 in the preceding year, though absolute net debt remains relatively modest at €1.68 billion. That said, liquidity is thin: the current ratio barely exceeds 1.0, and the quick ratio sits below 0.75. Inventories of over €22 billion represent a sizable portion of current assets, and trade payables of around €30 billion could place pressure on working capital if sales momentum weakens further.
