NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) — FY2025 Annual Report

NRG closed FY2025 with revenue of roughly $30.7 billion, up about 9% year-over-year, while net income declined to $864 million from $1.13 billion. The result caps a volatile five-year stretch in which earnings have swung from a $2.2 billion peak in 2021 to a small loss in 2023 and back to profitability. The combination of rising top-line and softening bottom-line seems to capture the year's central tension: revenue is improving even as margins compress.

The profitability picture may warrant a closer look. Operating margin slipped from roughly 8.6% to 6.0%, and net margin narrowed to 2.8%, well below the five-year average. Part of the swing appears to stem from non-operating items: FY2024 benefited from a large operating gain, while FY2025 recorded a modest loss on asset sales, alongside a $39 million investment impairment. Notably, the prior year's results were also distorted by a $382 million loss on debt extinguishment that did not recur in 2025, so the underlying operating comparison is arguably messier than the headline decline suggests. Segment-level data shows the East and Texas operations both retreating from unusually strong 2024 operating income, while the Vivint smart-home unit's contribution shrank considerably.
