Apple has a history of reports surrounding electric car developments including (Project Titan started in 2014), as well as their desire to develop autonomous driving software systems. Recent news quoted below suggests Apple is getting closer to making a move.
The timing looks perfect as from 2024 electric cars should be purchase price competitive or cheaper than internal combustion engine cars. Apple will most likely design the car and provide the online services while outsourcing the car manufacturing to perhaps Foxconn Technology [TPE:2354] (OTC:FXCOF), Magna International [TSX:MG] (MGA), or BYD Co. [SHE: 002594] [HK:1211] (OTCPK:BYDDY) (OTCPK:BYDDF). Apple has reportedly also had past talks with Hyundai (OTCPK:HYMLF) (OTCPK:HYMTF), Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY), Volkswagen [Xetra:VOW](OTCPK:VWAGY) (OTCPK:VLKAF), BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY), Daimler Mercedes (OTCPK:DDAIF, OTCPK:DDAIY), and e-platform manufacturer Canoo (GOEV). Surprisingly there has been no talks that we know of between Apple and Tesla (TSLA).
Apple Inc. is in early-stage talks with China’s CATL [SHE:300750] and BYD, about the supply of batteries for its planned electric vehicle, four people with knowledge of the matter said.....Apple has made building manufacturing facilities in the United States a condition for potential battery suppliers, said two of the sources.
