Shares of German clinical-stage biotech BioNTech (NASDAQ: BNTX) jumped 23% July, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. For context, the S&P 500 index returned 5.6% last month.

(This month, the volatile biotech stock has pulled back 6.2% through Aug. 7, compared to the broader market's 2.5% return.)
