What Happened in the Stock Market Today

Indexes fluctuated between gains and losses during the trading session Wednesday, but ultimately closed in the red. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) and the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) both posted small losses.

Crude oil prices fell sharply after the government reported higher inventories of gasoline, dragging down energy stocks on fears of slowing demand. The SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (NYSEMKT: XOP) lost 3.1%. Tech continued to rebound, with the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLK) gaining 0.6%.
